About Bad Credit Scores and Getting a College Loan
Many people worry that they will not be able to obtain a college loan if they have bad credit. However, it is possible to have a low credit score and still get a college loan.
How (and Why) is this possible?
When the government figures financial need as well as income they do not factor credit history in as part of the determination for getting a student loan. This is done so that high school students with little to no credit history have a chance to further their education.
Yet, they may not be poor enough to receive the grants that one would normally get if they attend school. Just about anyone is able to get a loan to pay for school regardless of credit history, even if it is someone who has bad credit.
This does not mean that a person is guaranteed funding for school. However, this funding is usually provided to anyone who demonstrates significant enough of financial need. If you do receive loans however the money should be used wisely.
Borrowing and Spending Tips
If you are concerned about improving your credit score it may help to be presented some practical borrowing tips. Please see the suggestions presented below:
- Try to seek as much scholarship and grant funding as possible. You do not have to pay this back and it will reduce the amount of loan money you would need.
- Only take as much money as you would need for school. You are not required to take out the maximum amount of funds granted to you if you do not need it.
- Whenever possible seek subsidized student loans versus unsubsidized student loans. This will allow you to defer (suspend) the loan without accumulated interest. This is done in case of an economic hardship or in case of some other reason why a person cannot pay.
- Try to work a little bit while going to school as long as it does not affect your study time. This will cut down on the amount of money needed for tuition, living expenses, books, and supplies. Thus, the amount of loan you take out will be smaller if you do take it out.
- Spend your school money carefully when you do receive it. Make it stretch as far as you can and avoid too many frivolous expenses such as that new pair of shoes or MP3 music you do not need.
